  • Saputo, Agropur Co-op, Kraft Canada and Parmalat Canada continue to dominate cheese sales and are expected to record a combined value share of 85% in 2014
  • Cheddar, mozzarella and cream cheese are the most popular cheeses, they accounted for more than two-thirds of total sales in 2013.

Drinking Milk

  • Three major milk processors (Saputo, Agropur and Parmalat) hold a total market share of approx. 83% in the Canadian drinking milk market. Store brands and private labels represent about 7% of the drinking milk market.
  • There has been significant growth in goat milk sales (4% in volume) over the last few years due to the fact that lactose intolerant people consume it as an alternative to regular milk.

  • Three major yogurt processors (Danone, Ultima Foods and Parmalat Canada) hold a combined market share of approx. 73.5% in the yogurt market. Private labels represent a very limited share (3.3%).
  • Popular flavours in the fruited spoonable yogurt category include strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, peach, cherry, mixed Berries and apricot etc.
  • Vanilla and cappuccino are the most popular flavors for non-fruited spoonable yogurt, followed by mocha and maple.
  • Yogurt is mainly consumed in spoonable form (91.5%) compared to drinking yogurt that accounts for 8.5%.

Ice Cream

  • Top flavours for ice cream in Canada are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, butterscotch, caramel, coffee, mint chocolate chip and maple walnut.
  • Three major ice cream processors (Nestle Canada, Unilever Canada and David Chapman’s) hold a combined market share of approx. 64% in the ice cream market. Private label and artisanal ice cream hold 12% and 1.1 % shares of the Canadian ice cream market respectively.
  • The frozen yogurt segment in Canada is growing.
